New Jersey School Requirements for Children's Vision

  • New Jersey requires a vision screening
  • Frequency: Biennially for students in kindergarten through grade 10

Requires each district board of education shall ensure that students receive screening for visual acuity, conducted biennially for students in kindergarten through grade 10. Screenings shall be conducted by a school physician, school nurse, physical education instructor or other school personnel properly trained. The school district shall provide for the notification of the parent of any student suspected of deviation from the recommended standard. New Jersey Administrative Code §6A:16-2.2

Details the services provided by the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired’s Prevention Services Program. The Prevention Services Program was designated to provide "all means which it deems feasible for ameliorating the condition of the blind and visually impaired within the State." The rules establish a pre-school vision screening program to provide vision screening services to pre-school children. New Jersey Administrative Code §10:94
